Welcome to the website of the CartoGIS Cluster at the Geography Department of Ghent University. In the CartoGIS Cluster, main research topics are pursued:

(1) data quality (e.g. quantifying spatial errors; using data quality indicators as a support for recognition of object changes in the update process; objective quality definition of cartographical representations);

(2) geographical information production, infrastructure, management and modeling (e.g. geographical information and cartography for World Heritage; fundamental and applied study of map production and map production management in various circumstances);

(3) risk analysis (e.g. information processing on flood risk; risk analysis and use of geographical information in managing disasters and disaster control);

(4) moving objects (e.g. tracking of moving objects; modelling, representing, and reasoning about spatio-temporal information; cognition and linguistics of moving objects; time geography and accessibility measures).

(5) time and geography (time geography, historical cartography, representation of and reasoning about time).

(6) 3D-GIS (e.g. representing and networks in building blocks).

(7) Applications in GIS and cartography

Besides this, research issues (both fundamental and applied) concerning networks and webGIS are studied. Finally, specific attention goes to educational projects such as the development of e-learning environment tools for geomatics.
